Muscat:
Oman team received a red carpet welcome at the Muscat International Airport, after they returned from participating in the West Asian Football Federation (WAFF) Championship that was held in Kuwait.
Sayyid Khalid Al Busaidi, chairman of Oman Football Association (OFA) led the welcoming party and later held a dinner banquet in honour of the team that reached the semifinal of the championship.
Oman eventually lost to Iraq 2-0 and won the third place in the championship. The WAFF title was won by Syria after they beat Iraq 1-0.
Oman, who managed 1-1 draw against Iraq back in June in the Fifa World Cup 2014 Asian Qualifiers at Doha, will host Iraq in June next year.
They are in Group A of the AFC Asian Cup 2015 qualifiers alongside with fellow West Asians Syria, Jordan and Singapore.
Speaking to the media, a delighted Sayyid Khalid said the team's performance is a prime example that football in Oman is moving on the right track. "I have no doubt that football here is moving on the right track. Our team has done exceptionally well in this WAFF Championship. All credits to the players and the support staff," he said. Earlier the team was received at the airport by Sheikh Nayef Al Marhoon, first vice-chairman of OFA along with Sheikh Hazza Al Saadi, executive director and Hamid Al Jabri, board member.
