Muscat: With the objective of "giving back to the nation" and "sharing experience with the younger generation", international rally champion Hamed Al Wahaibi has launched the Oman Youth Rally Cup (OYRC).
To be held under the aegis of Safety First, Oman's independent, not-for-profit, road safety campaigning organisation, the strategic objectives of OYRC are to provide young Omanis an opportunity to build upon their motorsports and engineering talent, enhance this talent by providing world class training, development and guidance, and ensure that youths are geared to contribute to the national economy and society.
"Critically, it will form another important mechanism to communicate about road safety," Hamed Al Wahaibi said.
Al Wahaibi said the initiative was launched because "not many avenues are available for the youth to expend their energies or showcase talent. Besides, road safety is a critical problem that impacts everyone and needs to be tackled right away," he said.
"Our aim is to support the nation's youth through motorsports. We want to use motorsports as a platform to achieve a lot while building future champions," he added.
Reportedly costing around OMR400,000, Al Wahaibi informed that he has already invested half of the amount for OYRC.
Explaining that the project is a great opportunity for both private and public sector participation, as youth development is a key agenda for Oman, Al Wahaibi said, "For me, personally, this is another way to give back to the nation, which has supported me in my international rallying career.
"I also hope to receive support from other quarters." Al Wahaibi has roped in motor racing champion Ahmad Al Harthy to be the "role model" for the campaign.
He said, "Al Harthy is a hero for the youth of Oman. The way he has conducted himself has been a great inspiration for them. Having him on board for this project will be a great encouragement for the youth."
Responding to the gesture, Ahmad Al Harthy said, "It is an honour to be associated with this project, as I believe that Omani youth are highly talented, and with our support and mentoring, it will enable them to achieve great success in and outside Oman.
"Further, the fact that these future champions will be engaging with the wider community on road safety lends even more balance and supports our need to have better and safer road users in order to reduce the current rate of accidents and fatalities."
Initial screening of potential candidates will start on January 31, while driver and co-driver registration has started on January 6.
The year 2013 will witness the unveiling of the Phase 1 of the OYRC that will divide the chosen, 18 young Omanis into three groups. Each team will race for the coveted youth rally cup in a specially designed Toyota Yaris model, completely built and tested for rallying in Oman. The driver and co-drivers will be selected from the youth who are already engaged with motorsport and rallying in Oman for the first phase.
In addition, the technicians will be selected from the pool of applicants involved in engineering studies. All applications will be reviewed and the shortlisted candidate will go through aptitude tests, physical fitness assessments and interviews.
The final three teams will undergo specialised training delivered by professional trainers on key concepts like defensive driving, CPR, road safety, rally driving, navigation, timing and important soft skills development such as communication and presentation, media and sponsor management as well as continuous fitness training and assessment.
