Muscat: The Minister of Environment and Climate Affairs has issued a ministerial decision to shut down some companies which have been flouting the environmental norms. On the basis of the Law on the Protection of the Environment and Pollution Control issued by Royal Decree No 114/2001, Mohammed bin Salim Al Toobi, Minister of Environment and Climate Affairs, recently issued orders to suspend work of some companies operating in the Sultanate. The decision came after these industrial units were found to be operating without obtaining environmental approval, in violation of the Law on the Protection of the Environment and Pollution Control.
The ministry also clamped penalties on 14 companies and crushers in the governorates of North and South Sharqiyah where inspection teams detected these units flouting norms. Nineteen other units were also punished on similar charges. Al Toobi said that the ministry is intensifying its drive against the industrial establishments violating norms in the Sultanate.
