Muscat: Women of different nationalities modelled a rainbow of Indian sarees at the American Women's Group (AWG) in an event aimed at enhancing cultural exchange. AWG member Revati Sanzagiri made a presentation on the various types of sarees and the Solah Shrungar, or 16 adornments for a woman's beautification, from the bindi and earrings down to the anklets.

She also demonstrated the various styles of wearing both 6-yard-long and 9-yard-long sarees.
"Lots of friends of mine —American, European, and even Omanis — are always amazed by sarees, and they find them difficult to wear. I told them it's not that difficult. It's six or seven steps," stated Sanzagiri.

Sanzagiri, who has more than 80 sarees in her collection, added that she thinks they are the most comfortable dresses. Cassandra Bullock, AWG president, said the event was important because Indian culture features heavily in Oman, given the high number of Indian citizens living here, and because the AWG has several Indian members.

"It's always so interesting. The fabrics themselves are so beautiful and luscious. It's not very often that you get to try them and wear them properly," Bullock remarked, wearing an empress saree with real gold in the material. "It's good to learn about it. It's not just a piece of fabric. There's a history behind it."

Katherine Andrefsky, an AWG board member who modelled one of the sarees, said it was interesting to try on the Indian national dress for the first time. Sporting a bright orange and green cotton saree, Andrefsky looked vibrant and elegant.

"It feels like I'm a Christmas present," she stated with a laugh. "As long as I was in a country where it was allowed to be worn, I'd certainly wear one," she added.
