Exciting start to Oman U-18 ITF tournament

Muscat: The first of two Oman ITF Junior (Under-18) Tournaments got underway to an exciting start with the top seeds advancing with ease at the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex Monday.

During first day's action of the first Grade 4 tournament organised by the Oman Tennis Association (OTA), boys top three seeds as well as girls second and third seeds recorded one-sided victories.

Boys number one Michail Pervolarakis of Cypriot defeated Turkey's Egehan Sertkaya 6-2, 6-3 in the first round while number two Xander Veys from Belgium conceded just just three games in his 6-0 6-3 win over Elftherios Theodorou of Greece.

German third seed Milen Ianakeiv was too good for Saudi Arabia's Omar Ahmed racing to 6-0, 6-0 win. The other seeds to advance in the boys category were Cypriot's sixth seed Konstantinos Ilia, Turkmenistan's number seven Alesandr Ernepesov and number eight Arturs Lazdins from Latvia.

Ilia defeated Mert Zincrili 6-3, 6-3, Ernepesov posted a 6-2, 6-2 win over Daniil Michshenko of Kazakhstan and Lazdins overcame Britain's William Falvell 6-2, 6-3. In the girls section, Kazakhstan's number two seed Yekaterina Gubanova eased to a 6-1, 6-0 win over Nida Shahid Kamal, one of the three Indian girls in action on the day. The other two Indian girls Sanjana Sudhir and Karman Kaur Thandi advanced to the second round. Sanjana had to dig deep for a come-from-behind 5-7, 6-4, 7-5 win over Serbian Milica Novakovic while Karman Kaur routed Egptian Safaa Mathana 6-1, 6-1.

The only seeded player to be upset on the day was Russian number eight Valentina Kulikova who went down to Dutch girl Inger van Dijkman 7-5, 6-3.

Omanis in doubles
The Omani challenge in the singles ended in the qualifiers on Sunday but there is still hope for the local fans as the organisers have given wild cards two doubles teams, one in the boys and the other in the girls. The local boys doubles team to get the wild cards are Ahmed al Balushi and Younis al Rawahi and in the girls its is Sarah al Balushi and Samar al Bakri.
