Muscat: With its first-ever Sports Exhibition and Conference set to take place next month, the Ministry of Sports Affairs (MoSA) aims to make Oman a sporting destination, according to a top official.
Speaking to the media to announce the plans for the Oman Sports Exhibition and Conference, which will be held at the Oman International Exhibition Centre in Seeb, Fahad Al Raisi, Director of Sports Development and Welfare at MoSA, yesterday said the government is "carefully focusing" on making the country a global destination for sports. "That is our goal, and we are trying to do everything at our end to become a sporting destination," Al Raisi stated.
The three-day event, organised by Global Exhibitions and Conferences (GEC), will be held on Feb. 4–6 and is expected to see participation from 30 sports bodies across the country, including six professional clubs as well as all the sports associations, global brands, governing bodies, and sports goods suppliers in the country.
Speaking about the reason for organising an event of this magnitude, Al Raisi explained that the exhibition and conference would bring all the officials together under a single umbrella. "It would give us a chance to meet everyone, and it would also give us a platform for exchanging ideas. I may not know anything about cricket, but I think some of those who attend may be able to tell me about the game," he pointed out.
Major highlights Interestingly, the highlight of the conference will be the presence of former Real Madrid and Blackburn Rovers star Michel Salgado, who will be speaking about his successful footballer career. "We did try to invite some stars, but due to time constraints, they could not make it," Al Raisi said.
Other key speakers at the conference include Matthieu Reeb, General-Secretary of Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), Lausanne; Stuart Mclnnes, International Sports Law Consultant at CAS; Marc Theisen, honorary president of the Luxembourg Olympic Committee; Carlo Nohra, Chief Executive of Al Jazira Sport Club; Dr. Amar Al Rowas, Chief Executive Officer of OmanTel; and Dr Hamad Al Ghafri, National Youth Committee Chairman.
According to Al Raisi, keynote speakers from CAS were invited because of the recent Oman Football Association election crisis that had almost brought the football governing body to the brink of suspension from Fifa.
"Having these speakers from CAS here will certainly give the clubs and other entities some ideas on how to handle such issues in the future," he remarked.
Speaking about the event, Al Raisi noted, "Since this is our first exhibition and conference, we only managed to get a few sponsors for the event, but I am sure, as its popularity grows each year, we will eventually have many more sponsors."
C.J. Paul, Chief Executive Officer of GEC, pointed out that organising such events could strengthen the sports activities in the country. "It certainly does strengthen the sport. A great deal of consultation and planning has gone into organising this event, and I am sure it will turn out to be successful," he added.
Mixed Martial Arts, fitness competitions, yoga, roller skating, taekwondo, karate, and basketball training will be added attractions at the exhibition. Al Raid Business Center, Sun and Sand Sports, Supa Sports, Oman Golf Committee, Al Wahaibi Motor Sports, Arab Merchants, Emirates Medical Center, Green Cover, Premedion Health & Spa, Royal Oman Police, and United Club Cars will participate as exhibitors.
The Oman Football Association, OmanTel, and Nawras are the Platinum Sponsors; Oman Arab Bank and Eye Laser Center are the Gold Sponsors; Pocari Sweat, Al Mouj Golf, and Al Usra are the Silver Sponsors; Rev GX is the Activity Sponsor; and Times of Oman, Al Shabiba, Hi, and Al Youm Al Sabah are the media sponsors.
