Muscat: The Public Authority for Consumer Protection (PACP) has announced the names of the accused in the case of selling expired goods consumed by children. These items were seized in the recent raids conducted by the PACP.

The owners of Dwarkadas Kalyanji & Partners, based in the Wilayat of Muttrah in Muscat Governorate, had purchased and imported expired commodities or almost-expired commodities. They then resold these products after changing the production and expiry dates, by removing the written date and adding a new label bearing a new production date with a shelf life valid for many more years.

The accused had another scheme to cheat by putting sweets into new cases and packages and sticking printed labels on them, bearing validity dates that added many years to their life.

The violators resold these products in the market.

Such materials have a specific validity period, after which many of their ingredients and components degrade, posing a serious hazard to the health and safety
of children.

The volume of seized items exceeded 1.8 million commodities, including children's sweet cases and packages.

The violators are Jay Singh Dwarkadas Asar, Ratnsse Dwarkadas Kalyanji, and Ranjit Kumar Dwarkadas. They held the posts of manager and investors.

Dr Said bin Khamis Al Kaabi, Chairman of PACP, said, "The cooperation of the Public Prosecution in this case is an encouragement for our staff. The support we received from all the concerned establishments and individuals in the community is evidence of the public awareness and appreciation of the role played by the PACP.

"Such crimes have a huge effect on the economy as a whole. Trade cannot be based on cheating and forgery because this means that the markets will be affected and honest traders will leave the market. This could also lead to the disappearance of justice, honesty, and transparency, upon which successful markets are based."

Sheikh Ahmed bin Ali Bin Humaid Al Balushi, chairman of the Public Prosecution and the Director of Consumer Protection Cases Department, said, "The judicial police officers went to the scene of the crime after obtaining an inspection license, according to Article 80 of the Criminal Procedures Code. During the inspection, the accused persons were seized in flagrante delicto while changing the dates of foodstuff, including different kinds of sweets in huge quantities reaching 1.8 million pieces.

Stores sealed
"Immediately, we moved to the scene of the crime for an inspection. The decision was made to close and seal the stores after obtaining a judicial license from the primary court to do so, under Article 87.80 of the Criminal Procedures Code.

"After that, we started an investigation of the accused persons, who accepted the charges against them. They have been remanded into custody pending further investigations," he added.

The Chairman of the Public Prosecution stated, "A judicial mandate has been issued to withdraw all expired commodities from  the markets in the Sultanate. A decision was also issued to publish the photos and names of the accused persons and to disclose the name of the establishment—Dwarkadas Kalyanji & Partners, registered under CR No. 1020579, based in the Wilayat of Muttrah in Muscat Governorate."

Looking for a short term profits is not a real business. Business is to be done on a long term perspective. Those culprits violated the trust of the Omani people and Government. They think that they are smart enough and can get easily rid out of this but someday the veil has to be lifted. Appreciate the job of PACP and Omani Government.

PACP has done a commendable job and may they continue to do so . Hope all those guilty are punished. People have become so used to doing unscrupulous crimes and think that they can get away.
