Muscat: Oman is all set to host the 17th GCC Golf Championships from February 23-26 at the Almouj Golf at The Wave Muscat.

Confirming the news to Times Sport yesterday, Mundhir Al Barwani, chairman of Oman Golf Committee (OGC) said all preparations are underway to showcase elusive event that is being organised by Sultanate for the first time. "It's indeed a privilege and honour to play host to this prestigious regional championship. We will ensure the successful and smooth conduct of the championship," Al Barwani said. It is worth noting that OGC had initially planned to organise the previous edition in Muscat last year, but was moved to Dubai following a last-minute request from the board.

"Golf is a rapidly growing sport in Oman. This time we are ready for it because our key objective is to promote golf in Oman further. We basically want to showcase Oman and it helps to tourism as well. In way this championship will be beyond golf," Al Barwani pointed out.

Oman currently has three major golfing centres ideal for hosting major international championships. Muscat Hills, Almouj Golf and Ghala Valley have been home to many local championships in the last few years. "We have been providing the tournaments to all the three golf courses. Oman Open was hosted by Muscat Hills and Oman Senior was hosted by Ghala Valley so we decided to have GCC Championship at Almouj," Al Barwani said when queried about selecting Almouj Golf for hosting the GCC Championship.

"We are grateful to the management at the Almouj Golf for their support and putting in place all arrangements at short notice and we value their support.  I am sure the course will be in superb condition and the players will relish the experience of negating the fantastic layout," he said.  Teams from all other five GCC states – UAE, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar and Saudi Arabia have confirmed their participation. Oman will feature two teams consisting of 16 players for the championship.

"Preparations of our team are going in full-swing and we are confident about the chances of our players. I am sure they can win the championship in front of the home ground. It will be the biggest achievement for us," Al Barwani added. Omani golfers had made an impression in the recently concluded Arab Golf Championship in Bahrain recently.
