Muscat:
Team Coorg Oman, as in the past five years, commemorated the 64th Indian Republic Day by hosting a friendly hockey match with the Oman Veterans at the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex in Bausher. With some excellent crowd support, the players were able to raise the standards of their game and held the Veterans off from scoring too often.
The skilful Veterans took the match with a 2-1 verdict. Team Coorg's lone goal came off a reverse flick from Lavin Mandanna.
The event was graced by the presence of J.S. Mukul, the ambassador of India, along with Oman Hockey Association (OHA) Chairman Sheikh Mahfood Ali Juma Al Juma. Also present was former stalwart of Indian women's hockey Jhansi Aiyappa, who presented the winner's trophy to Mohammed Shambeh Al Raisi, the skipper of the Oman Veterans team.
The Oman Veterans skipper also honoured Team Coorg. J.S. Mukul praised the efforts of Team Coorg in marking India's Republic Day with the flavour of the country's national game, hockey. Hockey veteran S.A.S. Naqvi, who has supported Team Coorg in all its activities, heaped praises on the orange-clad hockey lovers, encouraging them to do more to promote the game in the Sultanate.
Sheikh Mahfood was also full of praise as he promised to ensure that more of these events are held regularly. OHA was also represented by its energetic general secretary, Redha Taqi Al Lawati. Prominent amongst the other dignitaries was A.P.S. Chauhan of the Indian Embassy.
During the match, the Oman Veterans notched their first goal through a brilliant effort from Thani Sahim, but Team Coorg equalised the scoreboard through a beautiful goal from Lavin Mandanna.
However, Yunis sealed the match for the Veterans by scoring the winning goal.
At the end of the match, the OHA chairman presented mementos to J.S. Mukul and A.P.S. Chauhan. Team Coorg honoured the OHA chairman and secretary general, and a special honour for Naqvi was the highlight of the evening.
