Muscat: Thanks to one man's vision and the support of many artists, the Oman Cancer Association (OCA) has over OMR7,000 more to help it achieve its goals. Ibrahim Gailani's fund-raising project Art 100 x 100, which featured 100 artists, who each donated a piece of their work to sell for OMR100, concluded Monday evening when Gailani and the participants, handed a cheque for OMR7,200 to the OCA's president, Yuthar Al Rawahy.
"I'm just so humbled that people came together. It happened because of them. I'd like to thank every artists for coming forward and putting their faith in me. I just hope we can do this again next year," Gailani, a Pakistani artist who lives in Muscat, told Times of Oman.
Gailani has lost family members and friends to cancer, so wanted to do something to support those battling the disease. The show was held at Bait Al Zubair last month and 72 of the paintings and photographs sold.
Skyler Burt, an American photographer and the Head of Photography at the Higher College of Technology, decided to get involved in the fundraiser because he lost his brother to cancer. He also encouraged his students to donate their photographs to the cause.
"It was a great opportunity for the students at the Higher College of Technology to participate in the community and get involved," Burt said.
For Al Rawahy, Gailani's commitment to the cause, and the results, were inspiring and meaningful. She said people often say they will raise funds for the OCA, but fail to deliver, while the Art 100 x 100, on the other hand, was a huge success.
"It is our duty as citizens to do something about cancer. We need to do something about it, and I'm glad Ibrahim came forward and wanted to make a change," Al Rawahy said.
