Manama: At Amwaj Marina, Bahrain, nine world-class teams competing in the EFG Bank Sailing Arabia–The Tour are making their final preparations for their gruelling 15-day race.

The Gulf's only long-distance offshore sailing race will start in three days, taking participants on a two-week journey across 760 nautical miles in identical Farr 30 yachts, pitting them against challenging offshore conditions and the in-shore courses at four of the eight ports along the route, which covers 4 countries.

Amongst the teams finalising preparations is Al Thuraya Bank Muscat, an all-female crew led by world-famous sailor Dee Caffari, who single-handedly circumvented the globe.
"We have all been training hard over the last few months, but now, the team really needs to come together. We need to practice our drills, particularly for the starts and the spinnaker. If the weather picks up, we will need to be twice as efficient as the heavier crews," stated Dee. The wind for the opening leg is forecast to be 11–14 kilometres per hour, which may give Dee's lightweight team a competitive edge.

The all-Emirati Team Abu Dhabi, skippered by Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing sailor Adil Khalid, is competing in the race for the first time and is looking forward to testing its skills in home waters. "It's always tense before a race. We have received wonderful support from ADSYC and the government of Abu Dhabi, so we know these sailors are the best in the country and the boat is 100 per cent capable of winning," he remarked.

David Graham, Oman Sail CEO, added, "This season promises to be the best yet. This event represents the culmination of three years of development in offshore racing in the region."

Veteran of the international sailing circuit and 2011 champion Bertrand Pacé returns to the race with a new crew, Team AISM, representing the Emirate of Dubai. Skipper Bertrand said, "Preparations have gone really well, and the team is very close-knit. This is a great course to race, and I am confident we will finish with a podium place."

From February 10 to 25, the crews will travel together from Manama to Doha and ADSYC, on to Dubai, Dibba, and Mussanah, before finally arriving in Muscat.
