Muscat: Safety First, Oman's leading not-for-profit road-safety campaigning organisation, effectively utilised the Muscat Festival to make Omani roads safe through an activity titled 'Make The Pledge For Safer Roads'.

This year, Safety First ambassadors have successfully encouraged thousands of people to pledge their commitment to driving more safely on the roads of Oman, starting with this Muscat Festival-linked event at the Naseem Gardens.

The organisation, spearheaded by international rally champion Hamed Al Wahaibi and Oman's national football team captain and international goalkeeper Ali Al Habsi, was supported by well-known sports personalities Ahmad Al Harthy, Mohsin Al Busaidy, Imad Al Hosni, Fatma Al Nabhani, and Hussain Al Hadri. These stars of the nation—the road-safety ambassadors of Safety First—were present at Naseem Gardens to interact with the audience and further the cause of road safety from 8pm to 10 pm on February 3 and February 4, during the Muscat Festival.

Commenting on the occasion, Hamed Al Wahaibi said, "Muscat Festival has offered us the right platform to communicate the message of road safety to the visitors of the festival. Our aim is to constantly influence, educate, and positively change the perceptions, attitudes, and behaviour of road users in Oman. Through our event, we managed to attract a large audience, which has been very responsive in interacting with the safety ambassadors during the awareness activities. Our goal of reaching out to the people of Oman to sensitise them about road safety and the importance of being responsible on the roads was achieved at this event.

"The support provided by road-safety-conscious organisations and our partners—National Bank of Oman (NBO), OmanTel, the Royal Oman Police (ROP), and the Muscat Festival—enabled Safety First to implement this on-ground activity."

Safety First campaigns to reduce road accidents and fatalities in Oman by 50 per cent by 2020 in line with the United Nations Decade of Action for Road Safety initiative.

Hard work
"We are working very hard to achieve our goal of reducing the number of accidents and fatalities in Oman. Our partnership-based approach leads us to work closely with organisations that genuinely care about the situation on our roads and the impact of road accidents on families and the community. Their support of the cause of road safety has been welcomed and is highly appreciated. Through this event, we succeeded in getting a large number of people to pay attention to the issue of road safety and, importantly, to pledge to drive safely," stated Ali Al Habsi.

During the Muscat Festival, the first day of the 'Make The Pledge To Drive Safer' event witnessed the participation of an enthusiastic crowd, who pledged to drive more safely, enjoyed the fun activities, and met the Omani sports stars. The visitors had the chance to interact with, take photographs of, and get autographs from all the sports champions. The kids were ecstatic about getting the opportunity to play football with Ali Al Habsi on a miniature football ground.

A key feature of the event was the introduction of road-safety coaches from the ROP, which educated a large number of young adults on various aspects of road safety. On the second day of the event, live comedy and theatre acts were performed by Omani character artists, along with other fun activities, and prizes were distributed to members of the audience. Everyone on stage, including the kids, verbally pledged to become safe road users by wearing seatbelts, not using mobile phones while driving, and so on.

Sayyida Aalia Al Said; Brigadier Mohammed Al Rawas, Director-General of Traffic for the ROP; Dr. Amer Al Rawas, CEO of OmanTel; and Engineer Nasser Al Ghailani of Muscat Municipality, as well as representatives from the National Bank of Oman, attended and participated in the event.

Targeting the entire spectrum of road users and making this event suitable and attractive to people of all ages was one of the goals achieved by Safety First, in partnership with these supportive organisations and personalities.

The event was in line with Safety First's commitment to reach out and encourage every road user in Oman to pledge to follow the traffic's Golden Rules.

Commenting on the two-day event, Fatma Al Nabhani said, "I thank everyone who met us at the Safety First Muscat Festival event. It was indeed heartening to see the people pledge to be better road users. We, road safety ambassadors, encourage everyone to make the right choice to be a safe driver and passenger on our roads."
