Neeraj Pandey came up with 'A Wednesday' in 2008 which was like fresh air given the genre of thrill and this time people are waiting for 'Special 26' with baited breath that what is in store for them. And indeed, it is an intelligent movie about conmen that can only garner appreciation owing to its impeccable acting and stupendous plot.

Special 26, inspired by true incidents in 1980s, is based on a group of 4 conmen who posed as income tax or CBI officers, carried out forged raids and dexterously collected the victims' black money. With no records or FIRs, they managed to escape every time with a clean record and loads of black money. The members of the con-club being the famous khiladi kumar Ajay(Akshay), bright, resolute and the master-planner; Sharmaji (Anupam Kher),  a little weak-hearted before starting any raid but bang-on once they start; Iqbal (Kishore Kadam) and Joginder (Rajesh Sharma) who add muscle to the master-mind. They all live ordinary lives but swing into action once they are in an officer's attire. Watching the foursome in conducting raids with such fervor is certainly a delight.  These activities culminated with a famous scam raid that they conducted at the Opera House branch of Tribhovandas Bhimji Zaveri jewelers.

The (real) CBI inspector, Waseem (Manoj Bajpayee) along with sub-inspector Ranveer (Jimmy Shergil) get on a lethal chase to catch hold of the conmen while they are planning their last "big" raid.

The recreation of the 80s is downright terrific. The director's attention to detail is laudable; it puts you right into that era. Every detail is taken care of and not even a single thing is out of the place.

Akshay Kumar shows his competence of acting in full-form, he uses his stardom to bring good entertainment to the audience. Anupam Kher rocks as Sharmaji. He delivers a fabulous performance and yet again proves his versatility. As an actor.Jimmy Sheirgill is class-apart.  His character is like a man obsessed when he realizes he has been swindled into a fake raid at a corrupt and cowering minister's bungalow on January 26, 1987. He vows to get the conmen behind bars and for this; he looks for the support of the CBI officer Waseem Khan (Manoj Bajpai). Manoj Bajpai is the honest CBI sleuth. Since he had got no increment, he asks his boss in mock-seriousness: "Can't make ends meet. Should I start taking bribes?" That, of course, is the last thing on his mind. Brilliant performance by Manoj Bajpayee will leave you bewildered. Kajal Aggarwal has nothing substantial to offer. On the contrary, she is wasted. Divya Dutta has an interesting role that instills some laughter. Kishore Kadam and Joginder join in for an acting fest that is sure to give you the thrills.

"Special 26″ does not rely on cheap jokes or slapstick comedy and sticks to subtle humour. The only place Neeraj loses momentum is the romantic track and dance number, which was unwanted.

Nevertheless, get set for a delightful ride in Special 26.  Special 26 is tight, racy and intelligently handled thriller which grips, excites and is sure to leave you speechless. Neeraj Pandey has now established himself as a director of repute and deserves a round of applause.
