Muscat:
The Coast Guard arrested 645 infiltrators at sea in 2012, according to Colonel Bader bin Khalfan Al Zadjali. Col Al Zadjali added that the presence of intensive coast guard patrols deterred additional infiltration attempts and led to a reduction in such activities in the Sultanate.
The attempts to smuggle into the country illegal immigrants has been occurring more often in South and North Batinah governorates, compared to other governorates, resulting in the Police Coast Guard intensifying its patrols in these areas 24 hours a day, noted Al Zadjali.
Regarding the smuggling of narcotics by sea, Col Al Zadjali said the Coast Guard spared no efforts to fight smuggling attempts by adding very fast vessels to its fleet to pursue drug smugglers' boats.
Further, Col Al Zadjali informed that 50 persons were reported missing at sea in 2012, with patrols recovering 49 persons. Most of these reports were due to bad weather conditions, as many persons take to the seas and disregard weather reports.
Also, many fishermen's boats broke down at sea, often running out of fuel, which was a major cause for those reported missing, says Al Zadjali. Col Al Zadjali thanked citizens for their cooperation with the Coast Guard by informing the authorities about suspect boats approaching Oman's coasts.
The ROP's Coast Guard has advised citizens to stay away from such boats and, instead, notify authorities by calling emergency number 9999 or the Coast Guard operation centre at 24714888.
