SATT to mark Qatar’s national sports day with in-shore races

Doha: As Qatar gears up to celebrate its National Sports Day on February 12, EFG Bank Sailing Arabia–The Tour will hold an in-port sailing race at The Pearl Marina, involving a host of world-class sailors from across the Middle East.

The region's only long-distance offshore sailing race has been perfectly scheduled to let all communities and sailing enthusiasts in Qatar celebrate the sporting public holiday. Free to attend and open to all, the family event permits all spectators to watch the magnificent fleet of Farr 30 boats in action as they battle it out in Qatari waters to secure the top score in the in-port racing series, following the first leg of sailing between Bahrain and Qatar.

Initiated and supported by the Qatar Olympic Committee, National Sports Day includes a host of sporting events from gymnastics and athletics to football and karate and is designed to inspire a new generation of active sports fans, unite the community, and discover local talent.

Khalifa M. Al Sewaidi, chairman of Qatar Sailing & Rowing Federation, said, "Qatar National Sports Day is all about giving the community the opportunity to explore new challenges and encouraging an active lifestyle. Over the past few years, we have experienced a surge in sailing interest within the local community.

EFG Bank Sailing Arabia–The Tour is becoming renowned as a showpiece event and a family day out, alongside Qatar National Sports Day. It is capturing the interest of the local people and encouraging them to rediscover one of the oldest sports in the region and the world. Sailing talent is definitely growing, and with more challenging events that unite the region and attract competitors to the shores of Qatar, we hope to inspire future sailing heroes."

The competitors will arrive at The Pearl in the wee hours of the morning tomorrow, and the exciting in-port sailing will start at 11am on the following day.

Leaving Manama today, EFG Bank Sailing Arabia–The Tour calls at Doha, Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Ras Al Khaimah, Dibba, and Mussanah, and ends on February 25 in Muscat. The racing will include in-port racing at select locations.
