Muscat: Al Faisal was crowned the champion of the prestigious Centurion Cup, which concluded in grand style, after beating Coastal CC by a narrow margin of 5 runs. The tournament was organised by Al Rifa Friends, and 16 top teams from Oman participated.
Put in to bat by the opposition, Al Faisal made the most of the invitation, scoring 10 runs per over and setting a target of 71 runs for the loss of 4 wickets in the stipulated 7 overs. Major contributions came from Ahsan, who hit the top score at 28, and Mohsin, who remained unbeaten at 16. Jitu was the pick of the bowlers, with figures of 2 for 19.
Required to score exactly 10 runs per over, Coastal CC, in response, started in grand style when the first ball, which was a no ball, was dispatched for a 6 by Bilal Khan. However, with Bilal's departure, wickets began to tumble, and soon, Coastal was reeling at 23 for the loss of 6 wickets after 4 overs. Requiring 49 from 18 balls, Coastal bounced back in the fifth over, with Riyaz hitting Al Faisal bowler Salim for 27 runs. Requiring 22 from the last 2 overs, Riyaz swung the match in his team's favour with the 9 needed to win from the last over. Adnan, who was given the ball, bowled 2 consecutive wides but later finished the over with 4 dot balls to seal the victory for his team.
Riyaz remained unbeaten at 32 and was later declared the Most Valuable Player of the Tournament. In the semi-final matches held earlier, Coastal CC had crushed Century CC by 8 wickets, and Al Faisal had beaten OEC by a similar margin to set up an exciting final. During the prize distribution, Bilal Khan of Al Faisal was declared the Best Bowler, whereas the Best Batsman, Man of the Final, and Player of the Tournament awards went to Ahsan of Al Faisal, who received a Galaxy S3, Galaxy Ace Phone, Cruiser watch, and a trophy. The Most Disciplined team was Kims Hospital.
