Muscat: For delicious Omani food in a fine-dining setting at an unbeatable price, visit the venue set up by the Oman Tourism College (OTC) for the Omani Food Festival at Al Amerat Park.

Each night, staff and students prepare a gourmet Omani buffet that not only shows off typical Omani dishes but also gives the OTC students great practical experience in serving their customers and helping the chefs prepare the dishes.

"It's a good experience for handling situations in the workplace and an opportunity to learn more about hospitality and tourism. This is a great way to demonstrate Oman's traditions. The dishes are all traditional Omani food items that have been made by Omani chefs who teach at  the college, with help from Omani students," said Marwa Al Hamdani, a tourism and hospitality major from OTC.

The Omani Food Festival features a buffet with a selection of salads, soup, and appetizers. Entrées include shuwa and harees, and there are several desserts on offer. For just OMR5, guests can enjoy their meal at tables that have been set beautifully with white linens and silverware.

The event includes a fruit-carving demonstration, and a professional kitchen has been set up for chefs to offer classes to the public.

"The event is important for the food. It is traditional Omani food, and we don't want to lose it because it's part of our culture," stated Khalifa Al Farsi, an OTC instructor. "The shuwa, for example, is cooked in the traditional way — underground for at least 24 hours. We cook it that way every day."

Al Farsi noted that the event was a way to preserve Omani traditions, while giving students practical work experience and training. He pointed out that former students who had participated in the Omani Food Festival had gained confidence and are now working in places like the Royal Opera House Muscat.

Students also had a chance to meet industry professionals, including the manager of the Grand Hyatt, who visited the site and met with students. Some of these students could potentially secure internships or jobs at the hotel in the future. "It's great to have the Oman Tourism College here to showcase their staff as well as their cuisine. This is our contribution, as the Muscat Municipality, to the college. We have given them a platform to meet with clients, and their students receive on-the-job training," remarked Malik Al Hinai, one of the Muscat Festival organisers.
