Muscat: Testing and training centre, one of the key components of the new airports in Muscat and Salalah, was formally inaugurated yesterday by Dr Ahmed bin Mohammed bin Salim Al Futaisi, minister of transport and communications.
At a brief ceremony held at the new airport site, Engineer Salim bin Nasser bin Said Al Aufi, CEO, Civil Aviation Authority, said, "In July 2011 Ultra Electronics in a joint venture with Oman Investment Corporation were appointed as master system integrator (MSI) for Muscat International and Salalah airports for a contract valued at OMR127.5 million by the Ministry of Transport and Communication. The MSI work package includes turnkey design, delivery, installation and commissioning of the airport operational systems, building systems, communications, network and security infrastructure required both at Muscat International and Salalah airports."
"Within the package of works, Ultra is providing a test and training facility which was inaugurated yesterday. The purpose of this facility is to test the equipment that will be installed to ensure that it meets the functional and operational requirements prior to being installed at its permanent location at the airport," Al Aufi added.
Equipment, applications He further said, "The building will house approximately OMR7 million of network equipment and will further house in excess of OMR15 million of equipment configured in the pre-staging area. Ultra will establish a service and support desk within the facility to provide the ongoing support of systems within the airport. It will also train a significant number of airport staff from different groups on the use of different equipment and applications.
"In addition, Ultra will train Omani engineers and technicians as part of MC6 contract. Current forecast suggests training of 100 personnel per annum. It will adopt the principle 'Train the trainer' enabling long-term benefit to the country," he added. Rakesh Sharma, chief executive officer of Ultra Electronics, and Kalat Ghuloom Al Balooshi, Chief Executive Officer of Oman Investment Corporation, also spoke on the occasion.
The use of the facility is primarily for setting up and proving of the fully integrated system function; configuration of the systems prior to the delivery site; testing system physically, functionally, and information interfaces within MC6 and other MC systems; assembly of equipment, racks, cabinets and products off-site; training of all systems into operation and maintenance.
