Muscat: Team BuAli clinched the overall trophy of the Youth India Oman Athletic Meet, which concluded with a grand finale at the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex in Bausher this weekend.
Mohammed Shammen of BuAli won gold in 100 meters race. He also won the 200 meters race and long jump to regain the individual champion. The month long athlete meet was held in ten different centres in Oman. The centres were Al Khuwair, Ruwi, Seeb, Mussanah, Ibri, Ibra, Barka, BuAli, Khadra and Sur. The qualifiers from all the centres finally competed in the event finale at the SQSC.
Chief guest Dr Majid Al Busafi, of Olympic Athletic Association, gave away the trophies and medals and congratulated Youth India for taking the initiative to promote sports in Oman. Khalid Al Siyabi, the first Oman athlete to climb Mount Everest was the guest of honour and he was delighted to see such a huge gathering.
"The task of conducting a sports meet of this magnitude in ten centres in Oman is more than climbing a mountain, he said."
Hockey veteran SAS Naqvi was felicitated by Shiraj, chief patron of Youth India Oman. Naqvi, in his speech expressed his happiness saying: "That the effort taken by Youth India is commendable. He also said that the athlete meet looked like a mini Olympics.
Naqvi also took the salute as the teams paraded and declared the meet open.
Abdul Salam, an athlete from Indian School Al Seeb was the torch bearer. The oath was taken by Jabir Mustafa of Youth India.
Faheem Abdullah from Ruwi won a cash award of RO200 in the best digital photography contest.
Mustaq Ahmad, the chairman of Youth India, in his address to the gathering said: That Youth India will organise other sports like cricket, football and hockey in the future. Mohammed Iqbal, the chairman of the organising committee had thanked the teams, sponsors and all the well wishers for the support extended to conduct an event of this magnitude.
Noted sports commentator Salih Thacher anchored the prize distribution ceremony.
