Muscat: Bakhoor, an Arabic word which means steam, vapor or fume, is a superior home fragrance and air freshener used on special occasions like weddings, nuptials, or welcoming guests. Women use it to give their clothes an exotic smell. It is made of wooden chips which are soaked in oils, spices, resins, musk or other fragrant natural ingredients.

The hand made pot used for Bakhoor is called "Majmer" which means burner in Arabic. There are various kinds and shapes of Majmerwhich are also available at the Muscat Festival. Well-known and famous varities of Bakhoorinclude Maryam, Ashwak, Shahad, Ya-hama-kn, Rais-al-Oud, Bakhoor-al-Abyaz, Amwaj, and Al-Barad.
