Muscat: The Talks Futsal team delivered an outstanding performance at a training camp conducted in Dubai, recently. The team played opposite Al Wasl Club, the winners of last year's Emirates Futsal Championship.

The Talks Futsal team comprises young Omani athletes, who have been playing together for the last seven years. In the local futsal community, they are often referred to as the "Dream Futsal Team" and have won several local championships in the last five years.

They put up a good challenge to their rival, emerging victorious in the first match. The game belonged to Al Wasl Club in the second round; however, the Talks' players garnered invaluable experience and a taste of real competition by playing against a professional futsal team. Al Wasl officials were also impressed with Talks' performance, creativity, and technical skills.

This could well be a new beginning in the futsal league for the Talks team, which is set to hone its skills under the supervision of a specialised Brazilian coach. Upcoming events on the team's futsal calendar include a training camp in Doha this May and an international tournament in Malaysia in June. The Talks team hopes that like-minded individuals and organisations will help it to sustain the sport abroad through supportive sponsorships for international tournaments.

To date, there is no futsal league or national team in Oman, unlike in other GCC countries. However, the Ministry of Sports Affairs has reiterated its promise to start an Omani Futsal League and create a national team.

Futsal is a variant of football. It is played mainly indoors on a smaller pitch than regular football. Two teams of five players each—one of whom is a goalie—can participate.
Unlimited substitutions are permitted. The game uses a smaller ball with less bounce than a regular football.

The playing surface, ball, and rules create an emphasis on improvisation, creativity, and technique as well as ball control and passing in tight spaces.
