Eco club of Indian School Salalah participated

As part of the activities of School Eco Club, to create awareness among the students on environment and environmental care towards a green future, an activity was organized by Eco club of Indian School with the support of Ministry of Environmental and Climatic affairs, Dhofar Governorate, Oman.

54 students of class VIII and two teachers participated in this programme. They visited government ministry's permanent nursery at Awqad, Salalah. After a warm welcome by the programme manager Mr. Esam Al Busi, Dr. Ahmed Al Saidi, Director of Marine Conservation, Sultanate of Oman explained vividly to the students about the mangrove tree planting project and its importance.  He said that, this project has two phases. The first phase is to collect the mangrove seeds from the forest and the initial process is to plant it in the plastic bags. The second phase is to transplant the grown plants from the nursery to the swampy areas of the Dhofar coast.

Indian School Students took part in the first phase guided by Mr. Badr Al Balushi, Head of Wet Lands, Sultanate of Oman. In this stage soaked seeds of mangrove trees (kept 6 hours in water) were planted in the plastic bags which were already prepared and filled with proper soil by the nursery.

Since, these types of mangrove trees (Avicennia Marina) provide shelter for certain species of migratory birds like Flamingos, Western Reef Heron, Garganey, European Teal etc; the organizers arranged special bird watching telescopes and binoculars to watch those species.

Moreover, salinity test was conducted and shown to the students. Finally, Eco caps were given to the students. Everyone enjoyed the entire program and showed much enthusiasm in creating the environmental awareness. The President of the school management committee Mr. Cyril Samuel and the Principal Mr.T.R.Brown appreciated the effort of the Eco club.
