Muscat:
High school choirs from as far away as Ethiopia and Bangladesh, and an American university choir joined voices with TAISM's choirs for the school's 10th annual Festival of Choirs on Friday.
In total, 20 choirs from 13 countries gathered at TAISM (The American International School of Muscat) over the weekend to prepare for their concert which aimed to connect cultures. They were directed by visiting conductor Dr. Lynda R. Hasseler, from Capital University in Ohio, who also brought along 12 of her music students as mentors.
"I've directed many choirs, but never such an international one. It's a unique and beautiful event. Music is a bridge between cultures. I find that we're all so much the same in the end because we all love to sing," said Hasseler.
The concert included music from around the world, too, with songs from North America, Europe, Africa and the Caribbean. They sang in English, French, and even Swahili and Creole.
For the visiting students and choir directors, the Festival was an opportunity to experience a bigger choir and learn something new from Hasseler. More choirs than ever before wanted to participate, explained Melanie Brink, TAISM's choir director.
