Muscat:
A new champion emerged at the Markaz Al Bahja chess tournament when the latest edition of the Muscat's most popular board games were held amidst fierce battles in all categories.
And the latest to clinch the coveted prize in the open category was Jose Lus Zarandieta but not before overcoming stiff challenge from equally determined rivals.
In fact, at the end of intensely contested games, Jose finished with 3.5 points, same as Tomy Joseph. Based on Buchholz (BH) method Jose was declared the winner with 8.5 points and Tomy settling for second with 8.0 points. Khalid Al Hadadi had to satisfy with third place after scoring three points.
Under 14: After lacklustre performance in last tournament Sawad Shamsudheen showed his class as he won the under-14 event with full four points. Adithya M and Thejas Sasikumar collected three points each but Adithya took the second place on better tie breaking based on BH method.
Under 12: Dushyanth MK had no real threat to his reign in under-12 as he went on to retain the title with an unbeaten record that fetched him four points. Both Dynel L and Abhinav Gudipati took 3.0 points.
Based on Buchholz (BH) method Dynel took the second place with 8.5 points and Abhinav took the 3rd with 7.5 points.
Under 10: Shreyas Raghavan, Pradyumna Shetty and Sreyash Somesh Mishra all three ended with 3.0 points. Based on the Buchholz (BH) method Shreyas was declared the winner with 11.0 points followed by Pradyumna with 9.5 points and Sreyash Somesh with 7.5 points settling for second and third place respectively.
Round Robin games made Under-8 competition equally demanding and only the toughened little masters like Dhruvan G and Jijo Joy would grasp for the 1st place which eventually went to Dhruvan as he had beaten Jijo Joy in their individual encounter pushing Jijo to second place. The third place was shared by Ashwin and Shivani S.
The next edition of the Markaz Al Bahja chess tournament will be announced in due course. For further details contact Shan (92277539).
