Muscat: Bahrain once again showed its supremacy by winning its 16th title at the 17th GCC Gulf Golf Championships, beating Qatar in a close battle at Almouj Golf yesterday. It was a perfect comeback for Hamad Mubarak's team, which had lost to the United Arab Emirates in the previous edition held in Dubai last year.
Speaking to Times Sport, a delighted Mubarak, who has participated in all previous editions, said the victory has once again proven his team's domination in the region. "This is a very special win for us because when we lost last year, we were quite upset. But then, we worked hard for this. This is certainly a big moment for all of us," Mubarak stated.
Interestingly, Bahrain beat Qatar by a four-shot margin to clinch the title with a score of 677. Qatar became the runner-up by scoring 681, while the United Arab Emirates finished third on 729, and host Oman came fourth with a gross score of 777.
The three-day tournament concluded yesterday with Qatar's Ali Al Bishi clinching the gold, with an individual gross of 211. Veteran Mubarak took the silver medal, with a gross score of 223, while his team-mate Naser Yaqoub claimed the bronze medal, with a gross score of 225. "Yaqoub played a brilliant game that helped us close the gap and win the title," Mubarak acknowledged.
Oman's only success came in the form of Azzan Al Rumhi, with a gross score of 89. A disappointed Omani skipper conceded the defeat. "It was quite a disappointing performance. We were completely outplayed by the top three teams. We could have done a lot better here, but things didn't work in our favour," Azzan remarked.
Azzan is now looking forward to the Pan-Arab Golf Championship, which is likely to take place in Morocco in May. "We have taken some positives from this tournament. I am sure we will rectify our mistakes when we prepare for the Pan-Arab," he asserted.
Heaping praise on the junior team that came second in the championship, Azzan believed the triumph marked a new beginning for the young boys. "This is by far our best performance (by the junior team)," he noted. The young team, led by Ahmed Al Balushi, claimed not only an individual silver medal but also a total gross score of 158, finishing behind the United Arab Emirates. "They were at their best, and I am sure they will go a long way and make a great team in the future," Azzan added.
Oman Golf chairman Mundhir Al Barwani thanked his team for their participation in a spectacular tournament. "We had limited time and resources, but for the way we pulled it off, I must thank my team, who worked really hard to make this a grand success," he expressed.
Dr Mohammed bin Hamad Al Rumhi, minister of oil & gas, distributed the prizes to the winners in the presence of Sheikh Saad bin Mohammed bin Said Al Mardhouf Al Saadi, minister of sports affairs, and Khaled Abunayyan, chairman of the GCC Golf Championship.
