San Francisco: Facebook is updating its News Feed, the main stream of updates from friends, companies and media sources on the world's largest social network, as it seeks more ways to draw revenue from more than 1 billion users.
The company will hold a press event on March 7 at its headquarters in California, according to a press invitation sent yesterday.
News Feed, which now includes advertising spots, has become a key part of Facebook's monetisation efforts, including on handheld devices where users increasingly access the service.
In the fourth quarter, revenue from wireless devices made up 23 per cent of total ad sales as the number of users on smartphones and tablets outpaced desktop users. The press event may focus on mobile devices and include updates to make pictures and other elements larger, Greg Sterling, an analyst at Opus Research in San Francisco, said in an interview.
"They're going to need to squeeze more money out of mobile," Sterling said. "They really want to show they can deliver on these devices." Facebook advanced 1.9 per cent to $27.78 at the close in New York. The stock has declined 27 per cent from its initial public offering price of $38 in May.
At its last press event, Facebook in January unveiled Graph Search, designed to make it easier for users to find friends, restaurants, locations and interests based on their social connections. Facebook also is developing a smartphone application that will track the location of users, two people with knowledge of the matter said last month. The app is scheduled for release by mid-March, the people said.
Acquisition Facebook said it will acquire Microsoft's Atlas Advertiser Suite business, adding campaign-measurement tools that help it step up competition with Google for online-display advertisements. The team from Atlas will remain in Seattle, where the business is based, Menlo Park, California-based Facebook said in a blog posting. Atlas tools help companies choose and place ads on websites and monitor their effectiveness.
Facebook, owner of the world's largest social-networking service, is seeking to accelerate revenue, which is projected by analysts to slow for a fourth straight year in 2013. Atlas will help in challenging Google, which gained ad-serving technology in its $3.24 billion purchase of DoubleClick in 2008. Google will have 18 per cent of the United States display-ad market in 2013, compared to Facebook's 15 per cent, according to EMarketer. "If marketers and agencies can get a holistic view of campaign performance, they will be able to do a much better job of making sure the right messages get in front of the right people at the right time," Facebook said in the posting.
With Atlas, Facebook will be able to gauge how an ad campaign is performing on its own service and on other sites around the Web, Brian Boland, director of monetisation product marketing, said in an interview. Using that data, the company can help advertisers craft better marketing campaigns, including on its own service.
"One of the key things that we've heard loud and clear is around measurement and how important measurement is to them," Boland said.
