Musical trio cast their spell

Muscat: There are times when music can take you on an unexpected, wonderful adventure, and the trio of Zakir Hussain, Bela Fleck and Edgar Meyer did just that at the ROHM last week.

From the moment the legendary Indian tabla player walked onto the stage with banjo player Fleck and bassist Meyer, there was an exciting energy in the air. The trio proved that even the most bizarre combinations can create the most enchanting sounds.

They first played a piece called 'Melody of Rhyth', a triple concerto in which they were accompanied by the State Orchestra of India, conducted by Zane Dalal. While the State Orchestra of India was very good, it was the trio's encores without the orchestra that trio really got the audience's attention. They played a composition by Meyer called "Pile Up," in which Meyer led with his bass, echoed several bars later by Fleck on his banjo, with Hussain joining in and doing his own complementary thing.
