Muscat: Though Harlem Globetrotters have captivated audiences of all ages since 1926, their popularity has all but waned.
This is reflected in the response the children and adults have shown recently by queuing up to meet Buckets Blakes (famous for his hoops) and Hi-Lite Bruton (a favourite for his high-flying slam dunks) during their promotional one-day tour ahead of the big game on 28th October at the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex in Bausher.
But the team is not just about promoting basketball; it spells fun and entertainment providing a three-hour treat diffused with an impressive display of stunts and gimmicks, at the same time interacting with the crowd and getting them hooked on to the performance. It is the perfect way to spend quality time with friends and family and have a rollicking time.
The game will open with Globie the Mascot conjuring new tricks and treats for the audience that will be followed by the show. As most people have expressed a desire to meet with the 25-member team, they will have an opportunity post the game to click photographs and take autographs.
The playgoers can also buy Harlem Globetrotters memorabilia such as T-shirts, basketballs, mini basketballs, headbands, wristbands and illustrated Harlem booklets pre and post the event and get them autographed.
There will be light refreshments available during the short break during the game and all efforts have been made to keep the parking organised so as not to inconvenience the spectators.
Yannick Borlee, managing director, YB Entertainment who is bringing the event to town is quite taken aback by the response. "It is not just the basketball fans but people at large have expressed their delight at having a family event such as Harlem Globetrotters in town. Sports is a platform that everyone identifies with and if combined with a bit of fun, it overrides everything else," he added.
Tickets for the event are available at Pizza Hut outlets in Qurum, Madinat Qaboos and Al Khuwair.
The event is brought to the public by YB Entertainment, Merge 104.8FM and Al Wisal 96.5FM in association with Mazda Oman.
The supporters of the event include the Oman Basketball Association, Muscat Press and Publishing House, Pizza Hut, Qatar Insurance Company, Radisson Blu Hotel, Travel Point, Shark Energy Drink and Creative Communications Advertising & Marketing LLC.
Founded in 1926 by Abe Saperstein, Globetrotters introduced many to the sport of basketball and had them hooked. In 1941, the Globetrotters signed Reece 'Goose' Tatum who developed amazing comedy moves and gave a new fillip to the team and the sport.
They were pioneers in popularising the slam dunk, fast break, the forward and point guard positions as well as the figure-eight weave. The team has popularised the world famous tradition of ball handling with a one-of-a-kind family entertainment that takes the sport to an entirely different level.
