Top tourist destination: The Thailand Embassy has informed that 70,235 Omanis visited their country in 2012, and from January to July this year, 40,308 Omani tourists have visited Thailand.

Muscat: Notwithstanding reports of some attacks on Omanis in Thailand, the Royal Thai Embassy in Muscat has stated that the embassy did not have any relevant information to comment on in this regard. "Nevertheless, there are no media reports indicating that there are any groups behind the incident," a senior official of Royal Thai Embassy in Muscat said, in a written statement mailed to the Times of Oman.

He also claimed that Thailand was safe to travel and 22,353,903 tourists visited the country in 2012. "There are also an increasing number of tourists visiting Thailand each year, including Omani citizens," he said.

This statement comes after an Omani tourist was stabbed in a Thai town this month and four Omanis were arrested for allegedly consuming drugs in Pattaya, Thailand in January 2013.

According to Thai news portal Pattaya One, a 32-year-old Omani tourist was stabbed in the stomach in the second week of September after an altercation with a bar worker at the Walking Street in Pattaya, a popular beach resort in Thailand.

According to the news portal, the victim and the attacker were seen arguing animatedly before the Thai bar worker picked up a knife and stabbed the well-built Omani tourist in the stomach. He then fled from the spot.

However, the Thai police have identified the attacker from the CCTV footage recorded in the area and have issued an arrest warrant against him. The Omani tourist is now recovering from his injuries in a hospital in Bangkok and the police have intensified the hunt for the suspect.

Also, in January 2013, four Omanis were arrested for allegedly consuming drugs in
Pattaya, Thailand.

According to the police, they were called by the hotel staff after they reported drug use in rooms 234, 134 and 124, occupied by the Omanis, with one room being occupied by three men and the others by two men each. All of them were later released on bail.

Regarding the number of Omanis who visited Thailand, the official said 70,235 Omani people visited Thailand in 2012. "And from January to July this year, 40,308 Omani people visited Thailand," he added.

He also claimed that the embassy has been arranging various events in the Sultanate to boost tourism activities in Thailand. "Some of them are organising Thai cooking classes for citizens and residents in the Sultanate. Also, it participated in the Muscat Festival 2013 in January-February 2013, organised the 'Thailand Nights' event at Al Bustan Palace, a Ritz-Carlton Hotel, from May 31, 2013 and at the Muscat Grand Mall from June 1 and 2.

Besides, the 'Thai Festival 2013' was organised at the Muscat Grand Mall from September 3-7 earlier this month while 'Thai Film Nights' were organised at the City Cinema MGM from September 17–18.
