Muscat: The MV Logos Hope ship, home to the world's biggest floating book fair, will be docking in Muscat next week to sell books and greet its organisation's 43 millionth visitor.

MV Logos Hope is operated by GBA Ships EV, an international charitable organisation based in Germany. While the ship has visited Oman in the past, most recently in 2011, this visit will be especially memorable since GBA expects to welcome its 43 millionth visitor on board while it's docked in Port Sultan Qaboos.

"It is now my privilege to announce that the ship will be returning to Muscat. The question is, who will be that lucky visitor?" said Madeleine Paulsson, a spokesperson for Logos Hope, noting that the individual will be celebrated.

Open to public
MV Logos Hope will welcome the public from October 2 to 7 for people to browse through 5,000 titles in English, Arabic, Malayalam and Tagalog.

The affordably-priced books cover a range of subjects including literature, science, sports, hobbies and children's books.

In addition to selling books and encouraging reading, GBA Ships, which has visited over 150 countries since 1970, makes community service a priority. Some of the 400 members of the all-volunteer crew from MV Logos Hope will spend a day partnering with local charity I-Care. On October 5, they plan to distribute 11,000 bottles of water to construction workers and other labourers in Muscat.

"I have made several friends in Oman with a deep desire to make a difference through their voluntary work. I am encouraged by their like-minded goal of meeting the needs of people they meet in their daily life," Paulsson said.

The crew, which includes volunteers from over 45 countries, also has some special programmes planned for elementary schools, and students from Sultan Qaboos University and the Oman Tourism College.

MV Logos Hope will be open to the public from 2pm to 10pm. On October 6, it will be open from 10am to 1pm for women only. The entry fee will be 300 baisa for adults. Children under 16 are free, but they must be accompanied by an adult.

All visitors must take a shuttle bus from the parking lot behind the Port Services building in Muttrah. Also, they would need to carry either a national ID or a residence card.
