Hill to be consultant for airport projects
November 15, 2012 | 12:00 AM

Muscat: Hill International, a global project management company, won a RO41.8 million engineering consultancy contract linked to the expansion project of Muscat and Salalah international airports. The decision was taken by the Tender Board at its meeting on Tuesday.

The United States-based international consultant won the consultancy work for the multi-billion-rial expansion work, by pushing aside two other bidders Dar Al Handasah and AECOM Middle East, said an official at the Ministry of Transport and Communications.
The Ministry of Transport and Communications tendered the work, after they decided to cancel the contract of Cowi-Larsen after December 2012.

Now, Hill International, which is a global leader in managing construction risk, will take over the work from Cowi-Larsen and will work in close coordination with various contracting firms involved in the expansion project till its completion. In fact, there are several impediments in completing the airport development work on time, as many contracting companies are involved in implementing different packages of work.

Scheduled completion
As per the plan, Muscat and Salalah airport expansion project, which is considered as one of the biggest construction works in the Sultanate, will enhance the passenger handling capacities to 12 million and 2 million, respectively. The expansion is expected to be completed by 2014.

The Ministry of Transport and Communications has set up a National Committee for Airport Development to speed up the massive expansion programmes of two international airports and development of four green field regional airports. This panel, which follows up the work on a daily basis, is working on improving the development programmes of these airports.

10,000 project assignments
Hill International, with 3,300 employees in 110 offices worldwide, provides programme management, project management, construction management and construction claims and consulting services.

Engineering News-Record magazine recently ranked Hill as the eighth largest construction management firm in the United States.

Having participated in over 10,000 project assignments with a total construction value of over $500 billion, Hill has managed all phases of the construction process, from concept through completion.
