Muscat: Promoting the game is the top most priority for the newly elected Oman Volleyball Association (OVA) chairman Sheikh Badr Al Rowas.
Speaking to Times Sport yesterday, Rowas who is also the chairman of Dhofar Club said he will work hard with his team to popularise the game in the country in the next four years.
"My top most concern is to promote the game. We need to improve the standard of the game and that will be our priority," he said. Rowas won against former OVA vice chairman Salim Al Jabry to win the post for the 2012-2016 period along with eight other board members in the annual general body meeting held last week.
Rowas while praising the efforts of the previous board in promoting the game, said 'much more' needs to be done.
"There has been so much focus on the national teams in this sport but that is not enough. We will start from the scratch and when I say that it means the clubs.
They (the clubs) are corner-stone of any sport in the country and they need to be guided in the right way in promoting the game.
Our focus will be on those aspects," Rowas noted. Ahmed Al Farsi who won against Dawood Al Shaizawi will be the new vice-chairman while Amar Al Toqi won against Arif Al Arabah to be the general-secretary and Ahmad Al Saeed had to face tough contest from Tageeb Al Shabaabi and Mumtaz Al Balushi to be elected as the treasurer.
From the 18 candidates who fought for the five board members seat, Saada bint Saeed Al Azri is the only women member to be elected while Hamood Al Hassani, Khalid Al Shahi, Ali Al Balushi and Ali Al Masroori were also elected to the board.
The soft-spoken Rowas said he would sit with the board and lay down a four-year plan for the game. "We will work as a team and I have certain plans while the other board members will also have ideas in order to help the game grow.
We will then formulate a plan for the next four years," he said. Rowas said while his precedence is to improve the local League, he would also look into hosting international tournaments in the future.
"We need to have a strong foundation of the game and for that we need to improve our League. We have a good national team but we need to build a pool of youngsters for the future in the same manner in which Oman Football is functioning. At the same time we will think about organising international tournaments in the country but we do not want to hurry into too many things at the same time," Rowas added.
