Arsenal too guns for Habsi

Muscat: Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is 'highly interested' in getting Oman international Ali Al Habsi in his squad, according to reports in the UK daily.

The highly rated Omani skipper who plays for English Premier League team Wigan Athletic has impressed not only Wenger but also Liverpool.

According to a report in London based newspaper Mirror, the Gunners boss sees the Oman shot stopper as an ideal candidate to rival current number on Wojciech Szczsny.

Wenger has been monitoring Al Habsi for over a year now and seems likely to make a move after being unimpressed with current understudy Vito Mannone.

While the Italian has had some decent performances, Wenger is keen to have two world class keepers at his disposal.

Al-Habsi has become one of the most highly rated keepers in the Premier League with some fine performances against top opposition. Al Habsi was earlier linked to Liverpool who is reportedly unhappy with Spanish number one Jose Reina after his inconsistent performance. However, Al Habsi denied the news as "mere rumour" as he wished to stay with Wigan with whom he signed in 2011.

"I have said it many times before but I love this football club (Wigan), I love the fans and I hope to give them much more," he was quoted as saying in the Evening Post.
"I am very, very happy at Wigan — as has been the case since I first came here. I am doing well, my form is coming on with every game I play, and my confidence is very high," he said.

The 30-year-old has been slapped with a price-tag of £7 million by both the sides and both the teams could battle it out in January. According to the report, Wigan manager Roberto Martinez is desperate to keep hold of Al Habsi.
