Muscat: Aimed at raising awareness on the role of physiotherapists, occupational therapists and speech therapists in psychiatry among healthcare workers, the Sultanate is all set to host its first international conference on 'Mental Health Rehabilitation', tomorrow.

The Rehabilitation Department at Al Masarra (formerly known as Ibn Sina Hospital) is organising this global meet that will host talks by top experts including Prof. Marie Elizabeth Donaghy, doctorate in physical therapy in the United Kingdom, Prof. Mary Margaret Nicol, doctorate in occupational therapy in the United Kingdom, and Dr Deepak Sharan, medical director and sole proprietor, RECOUP Neuromusculoskeletal Rehabilitation.

Speaking about the significance of hosting the event, Sheena Saju Philip, head of rehabilitation at  Al Masarra, said, "We will be moving to the new hospital soon where we have a very specialised rehabilitation centre with a day care unit. Before we shift to the new place we would like to expand our knowledge on rehabilitation."

Prof. Donaghy said, "We bring some of our expertise not just in the research we have been involved in, but also in activities with our Scottish government. We have been able as therapist to help the government get a better understanding of rehabilitation."

Prof. Nicol said she would talk about the importance of keeping mental health patients in the community rather than hospitals. "I am going to talk about the community care model that has evolved in the UK for mental health rehabilitation. My second topic will be about forensic mental health which is basically when people who have a mental health problem commit a criminal act. I am talking about how the model has evolved in the UK. My final topic is about how do you assess people because you can't treat them until you know what is wrong with them. That is the fundamental rule of therapy so I am going to talk about kind of assessment we have developing in the UK."

Dr Amira bint Abdul Mohsin Al Raaidan said, "I will talk on the importance of rehabilitation in substance abuse and drug addiction with a focus on community based mental health rehabilitation in addiction."

The awareness about the role of physiotherapist, occupational therapist and speech therapist in psychiatry is not adequate among healthcare workers. So the conference will enlighten the healthcare workers in the country about mental health rehabilitation through globally-recognised speakers who are pioneers in mental health rehabilitation.

"The conference will focus on recent trend in the rehabilitation of psychiatric, alcoholic and drug addicts. Moreover as we are moving to new hospital with large day care unit and well organised vocational and rehabilitation centre, the staff need to be updated and well informed about the latest intervention," a statement said.

The conference topics will include rehabilitation in acute mental health, rehabilitation in chronic psychiatry, rehabilitation in substance abuse and drug addiction, child psychiatry and community-based rehabilitation. The workshop will deal with cognitive behavioural therapy.
