Galfar conducts environmental awareness campaign

Muscat: Galfar Engineering and Contracting SAOG conducted an environmental awareness campaign with the theme 'Save Water, Save Energy and Save Earth' for its employees in all the sites from November 10 to 20.

Posters and banners in different languages, emphasising the cause of environmental protection, were displayed at prominent locations to capture the attention of the employees.

The campaign focused on reminding the employees of simple measures to be taken in their day-to-day activities that will have a positive impact on the environment. These include: optimal use of water, maintaining leak proof water network, switching off electric appliances when not needed, avoiding unnecessary journeys, car pooling, maintenance of vehicles and equipment for its optimal performance, use of secondary containment for oil and chemicals, utilisation of materials till its useful life, collection or segregation and responsible disposal of wastes, promoting greenery in offices and camps and maintaining good housekeeping.

Presentations and video displays were held emphasising global environmental concerns such as global warming, depletion of resources and significant environmental incidents from around the world. Quiz competitions were also held and the winners were given prizes.

T. G. Philip, vice-president (QHSE) of Galfar said: "Health, safety and environmental protection have always been core values in the company with focus and visible commitment from management to protect its employees and other stakeholders from injuries and ill health, prevent damages to assets and minimise impact on the environment in the course of its business."

HSE management system of Galfar is certified for compliance with the requirements of OHSAS 18001:2007 (occupational health and safety management systems) and ISO 14001:2004 (environment management system) standards.

"In accordance with the corporate objective of achieving excellence in HSE management and to further its efforts aiming at 'Zero Harm to People', the company focuses on continual improvement in performance through initiatives planned and implemented every year," Philip added.

Galfar recently won the first place for its exemplary HSE initiatives and practices and was presented with HSE award by Oman Society of Contractors (OSC) during the award ceremony that took place on the sidelines of IOSH Middle East Conference. Galfar emerged a clear winner amongst 18 companies that contested in OSC member category for the coveted HSE award.
