Oman to emerge as a key global logistics destination: Dr. Ahmed

Muscat: Oman is going to emerge as one of the top hubs of the logistics sector in the world, Minister of Transport and Communications Dr. Ahmed bin Mohammed Al Futaisi said on Saturday, while chairing the meeting of the Working Group, which is developing the national strategy of logistic services in the Sultanate for the 2014 -2040 period.

During the meeting,  work mechanism of members of the working group were reviewed and it was agreed upon to form seven core teams of the main group, each responsible for one sector.

The meeting also came up with many constructive suggestions and urgent solutions for the logistics sector adopted at this stage in accordance with the priorities and possibilities.

Dr. Al Futaisi said that the strategy is well paced and many teams have been formed to draft a national strategy for the logistics sector in the Sultanate.

He added that the first phase involved data collection and studying the current situation. The second phase will start and will be concerned with the analysis of the data. It will also include visiting certain developed countries in this area.

Vision 2040
He said that this strategy would feed Vision 2040 and its outcome will be a key aspect of the vision. He added that everyone agreed on a clear vision for the sector which would be the second largest contributor to the Sultanate's national economy. He also affirmed that the promotion and marketing elements are important factors in the national strategy on logistics as there is a working group covering this aspect and there will be a detailed study. The marketing team is part of the strategy.

 The meeting was attended by the group's members, including four from the public sector and as many from the private sector, besides three international experts from outside the Sultanate.

It should be noted that the seven teams include teams for promotion of logistics sector, technology and applications, promising business sectors, human development in logistics sector, logistic education, and infrastructure, as well as laws and regulations.

Forty-five citizens and expats participated in the exercise to prepare the strategy of logistics in Oman, including academics, industrialists, businessmen.
