Mumbai: Chennai Super Kings defeated Mumbai Indians by seven wickets in the eliminator at Brabourne Stadium here on Wednesday.

Chennai will now take on Kings XI Punjab in the qualifier II for a place in the final. Punjab lost to Kolkata Knight Riders earlier in the first qualifier, on Wednesday.

Chennai made lightweight of a massive score of 173 by Mumbai Indians and good knocks by almost all the top order batsmen chipped in with quick-fire cameos to kick the defending champions out.

Dwayne Smith took no time to get things under way for Chennai with a  typical one-legged flick that reached the fence. Chennai was on the march right away. Faf du Plessis looked even more comfortable at the crease after Corey Anderson was given the new ball to bowl. Later Suresh Raina (54 not out) eased along with his characteristic flicks and cuts to steady the chase. David Hussey (40 not out) gave him company and ensured victory was achieved with hiccups.On this form, Chennai will hold all the aces in the upcoming knock-out games.

Earlier, opener Lendl Simmons smashed a 44-ball 67 as Mumbai Indians posted a challenging score of173 for eight. Simmons provided the ideal start to the defending champions along with Michael Hussey (39)when they were put into bat.
