Muscat: Mutassim Al Zadjali retained his post as the chairman of Oman Tennis Association for a four-year term, after he convincingly beat an experienced Majid Al Asfour in the board elections held at City Seasons Hotel.

In what was a completely one-sided contest, the young Mutassim received 14 votes from the 21 clubs while Al Asfour could only manage seven votes.

Interestingly, this is Mutassim's second victory against Al Asfour. In May last year, Mutassim defeated the former OTA chief by 12 votes to one.

Speaking after his victory, a delighted Mutassim said he will continue to promote the game. "We will carry on with whatever we have built on so far. We had an amazing run in the last two years. We could do so many things in that short period of time," he said.
The soft-spoken OTA chief said his association will primarily focus on the Mini tennis programme.

"I think we could reach to a lot of kids on this programme and it has been a great success. We do not want to stop it instead we want to take it to a different level as such initiatives," he said.

When asked if he is happy with the votes he received, Mutassim said a "fair judgement" was made by the clubs.

"This victory means a lot to me. This victory means that the clubs have appreciated my work. I think it was a fair judgement. Of course Al Asfour is an experienced administrator but they had complete faith in me," he said.

From the total 22 clubs, only Al Mudhaibi Club was not allowed to participate in the election after they delayed in submitting the papers before the deadline. Salim Abubakr and Siddiq Al Hashmi was elected unopposed as vice-chairman and treasurer respectively while Mohammed Al Balushi (9 votes) beat Faisal Al Sanani (6 votes) and Khalid Al Makhzomi (6 votes) to become the new general-secretary. Saeed Al Barmani, Dr. Ahmed Al Saidi, Moosa Al Hinai, Jamal Al Masrouri and Abdullah Al Maqadam are the board members.

Al Hashmi who has retained his post as treasurer said several key initiatives are in the pipeline. "We are close to announcing few major initiatives. As you know we had some wonderful programmes last year and we will continue to have similar initiatives soon," he added.
