Muscat: An Indian expatriate has died of injuries suffered in a road crash near Ibra on Wednesday late night raising the toll of the single day's road accident deaths to eight.

Earlier in the day, seven Omanis, including a two-year-old girl, were killed on the road to Salalah between Gaba and Haima, as a two-car head-on collision brought tragedy on the second day of Eid.

The victim, identified as Mohammed Ali from the Indian state of Kerala, was injured while the car he and his friends were travelling in met an accident near Ibra.

"Mohammed and his friends were on their way back to Seeb after a pleasure trip to Wadi Bin Khalid, a popular tourist spot. It was a head-on collision. Mohammed suffered severe injuries. He was rushed to Ibra hospital but he succumbed to injuries late in the night," Shameer PTK, a social worker who is coordinating the repatriation efforts of the deceased's mortal remains, said.

His body is being kept in Ibra hospital.

"Out of the rest three co-passengers in the same car, one has suffered serious injuries. His condition is critical," Shameer added.

The injured are undergoing treatment in Ibra hospital.

Even though ROP has been cautioning drivers to drive safely, Oman has not escaped tragic accidents during Eid holidays.

A report released by the NCSI in January this year said 12 per cent of the road accidents in Oman turn out to be fatal with an average of one death in every 10 road accidents.
