Oman Airports to sign agreement to manage duty-free at Salalah airport

Muscat: Oman Airports Management Company (OAMC) has selected ATU Turizm Isletmeciligi as master concessionaire for the management and operation of duty-free, retail and food and beverage concessions at the new Salalah airport. ATU duty-free was selected thorough a competitive bidding process.

OAMC will sign a 10-year contract with ATU duty-free airport after successful satisfaction of the pre-award requirements.

"We are pleased to be working with ATU duty-free team to help us communicate our vision as Salalah is experiencing significant economic growth in its tourism, leisure and hospitality, industries and with passenger numbers growing in Salalah airport and spending per passenger increasing, we certainly look forward to a brighter future," Samer Al Nabhani, OAMC commercial operations general manager, said.

ATU Turizm Isletmeciligi was founded in 1999 as a joint venture between TAV Airports Holding and Unifree Duty Free/Gebr. Heinemann has grown into one of the world's leading airport retailers. It is based in Istanbul, Turkey.

The company has duty-free stores in Istanbul, Izmir, and Ankara, Alanya in Turkey; Tbilisi, Batumi and Kutaisi in Georgia; Enfidha and Monastir in Tunisia; Skopje and Ohrid in Macedonia; and Riga in Latvia.

The existing Salalah airport has witnessed a surge in passenger traffic in recent years. There has been tremendous increase in the number of tourists from neighbouring GCC and European countries as Khareef Festival has proved to be a big crowd puller, Samer Al Nabhani, OAMC commercial operations general manager, added.

The new terminal at the Salalah airport is due for opening soon, with an initial capacity of one million passengers per year. It has, similarly, been designed to allow for subsequent phased expansion in line with demand, with an ultimate annual capacity of six million passengers. Salalah airport's expansion is part of a strategic aim to further develop Salalah as a tourist destination. Located 1,000-km south of Muscat, and with a much cooler climate during the summer months, it is described as a place where tourists can experience ecstasy.
