Oman's Riyada programme trains young Omani leaders of tomorrow

Muscat: Following the success of last year's pilot, Ithraa has expanded its Riyada summer internship programme to bridge the gap between higher education and full-time employment for young Omanis.

Running from August 10 to September 4, students will gain insights into the working world under the support and guidance of some of the country's leading employers.

This year, Ithraa had more than 300 applicants competing for 40 places with 15 businesses including 10 students who will be interning at the National Youth Achievement Award Council in Singapore. Participants will learn skills essential for their career development, including time management, project management, leadership, sales and customer service.

His Highness Sayyid Faisal bin Turki Al Said, Ithraa's Director General of Marketing and Media, said, "The response this year has been outstanding. We were delighted with the number of high quality applications we received. Indeed, the applicants clearly understood the importance and relevance of work experience and how impressive that looks
on a resume."

Research from the US-based National Association of Colleges and Employers' (NACE) 2009 Experiential Education Survey demonstrates that 25.3 per cent of employers' full-time, entry-level college hires came from their internship programmes. In addition, the report shows that over two-thirds of candidates are offered full-time positions at the end of their internship.

Interns are placed in manufacturing, architecture and design, marketing, real estate, food and beverage, ports and logistics.

The month-long programme provides young people with the opportunity to be exposed to the day-to-day operations of a business and acquire early professional experience.

His Highness added, "Riyada will undoubtedly help students apply what they've learnt in lecture halls to the world of work. It will also help them build a network of professional contacts in the fields of interest that could lead to a future career."

Riyada 2014 participating companies include: NaranjeeHirjee, Nawras, Khimji Ramdas, 23 Degrees N, Reem Batteries, Merge 108.4 FM, Y Magazine, Oman Dry Dock, Poly Products, The Wave, Muscat, HUAWEI, Tarneem Design, Infinit8 and American Express Oman.
