December 10, 2012 | 12:00 AM

Muscat: A 26-year-old national committed suicide by shooting himself in the head in Al Maladah area in the wilayat of Masanah on Sunday. The deceased, identified as Ahmed, was working as a teacher in a government school. He was suffering from psychological illness, according to his relatives.

Ahmed was laid to rest yesterday in Al Maladah area. His family members said they had taken him to several medical consultants to diagnose his ailment but to no avail. Ahmed was known for his commitment to his work but recently his performance had declined and he had been skipping his classes.

Meanwhile, observers say that possessing traditional weapons has become commonplace among Omani families. Some people use them for decoration and others for hunting wild animals. The Royal Oman Police (ROP) has recently issued orders that citizens should have a licence for traditional weapons, an official told Times of Oman.

The official added that those using such weapons without licence would be fined RO100 and their weapons would be confiscated.

Illegals nabbed
Meanwhile, ROP arrested 288 illegal residents of Asian nationalities from Barka following raids conducted early yesterday. The illegal residents included 185 violators of the Omani Labour Law and 136 violators of the Expatriate Residency Law. The Muscat governorate police headquarters carried out the raids in cooperation with the Special Task Force, Directorate General of Intelligence and Criminal Investigation, Ministry of Manpower and Muscat Municipality, a senior ROP official said in a statement.

The illegals were rounded up on a tip-off. The raids were conducted as part of the ROP's efforts to curb illegal migrants and improve security. The raids will be conducted from time to time to nab violators and those who shelter and employ them.
