MUSANNAH: Oman Sail has launched the logo for the Laser World Championship that will be held at the iconic Sports City in Musannah next year.

Mohammed Jawad, adviser at Ministry of Finance and Oman Sail board member unveiled the logo along with David Graham, CEO of Oman Sail, Sheikh Sultan Al Farsi, Wali of Musannah and Jeff Martin, Executive Director of International Laser Class Association, yesterday. The World Championships that will be held here in Oman will be three separate events. The Senior World Championship will be held from November 14-23, next year while the Masters Championship will be from November 28, 2013 till December 7, 2013 and the World Youth Championship will be held from December 27, 2013 till January 3, 2014.

The Youth World Championship is open to competitors aged 17-21, the Masters to those over the age of 35, further sub-divided into age bands. But the most competitive of the three is the Laser Senior World Championship and it will be this that features many sailing stars from the Olympic Games.

Speaking to Times Sport, Graham said the championships could 1,000 visitors from at least 50 nations.

"Once the qualification stages are over we will know exactly how many teams will take part but if we have over 60 teams I think it's going to be the biggest spectacle ever," he said. Oman Sail had won its bid to host the Laser World Championships in June this year.

Jeff Martin said by organising such world class championships, Oman can aim in finding a place in the Olympic Games.

"Having top Laser sailors from around the world visiting Oman will unquestionably serve to inspire the country's up-and-coming sailors," he said. Mohammed Jawad said the championship will further improve the sport in the country "The World Championship is great opportunity to attract some of the world's best athletes, officials and media to visit Oman and experience the state of art facilities at Mussanah Sport City," he added.
