Bank of Beirut Challenger Cup begins in style

Muscat: The first round of the Bank of Beirut Challenger Cup tennis tournament has kicked-off at the Shangri La Resort and Spa. According to information received here, all the participants who entered the tournament have earned five points for participation while the players collected 10 points each for victory.

The 7-leg, four division tournament is prepared by NT Sports and Alex Tennis School (ATS) with the support of the Oman Tennis Association. The tournament which is primarily for U-12, U-14 (both girls and boys) will be held until May 2013.

"Sports play a major part in the development of personal abilities and ethics in society. We believe that taking part in a tournament extends well beyond physical activities and enriches many other parts of a child's life. It helps them hone their physical skills and improve their social values. It also gives them a chance to learn something they can enjoy for the rest of their lives," said Ramy Zambarakji, managing director of Bank of Beirut. W.H. Smith is the associate sponsor while Shangri La Resort & Spa is the venue sponsor.

First-round rankings: U14 girls: 1. Samar Al Bakri, 2. Rupsha Debnath, 3. Yashica Jain; U12 girls: 1. Rupsha Debnath, 2. Aisha Suleimani, 3. Tallulah Nieper; U14 boys: 1. Abdullah Al Barwani, 2. Younis Al Rawahi, 3. Ali Al Sarhani and Armaan Sattikar; U12 boys: 1. Abdullah Al Barwani, 2. Zakariya Al Suleimani, 3. Munir Al Rawahi and Aman Kazi.
