Muscat: An Omani was killed and nine others, including two nationals and seven Yemenis, were injured yesterday morning in a bus accident in Thumrait.

According to a Royal Oman Police (ROP) official, a Gulf Transport Company (GTC) bus on its way from Salalah to Abu Dhabi turned turtle near a roundabout in Thumrait at around 8am.

"One person died in the mishap while nine others were injured. The injured are undergoing treatment at Salalah Sultan Qaboos Hospital," the official added.

The deceased has been identified as Hamed Rashid Al Hinai, the driver of the bus.
"The bus was on its way to Abu Dhabi," an official from the GTC confirmed.

Meanwhile, a source in Thumrait said the bus overturned after the driver lost control near Royal Air Force of Oman (RAFO) roundabout, which is nearly 10km from Thumrait bus station.

"There was mist in the morning. We suspect that this might be the reason behind the accident," the source said.

"Earlier, rumours were doing the rounds that five people were killed in the accident, creating panic in the entire area. Later, it was confirmed that only one person had died even though more than a dozen are battling for their lives at the hospital," the source added.

However, the hospital sources said that none of the injured were in a serious condition and added that their condition is stable.
