Red Bull Soapbox Race heading to Oman
January 22, 2013 | 12:00 AM

It's time to start creating your human-powered engines as registration is now open for the Red Bull Soapbox Race which is coming to Oman for the very first time, and features some of the wildest legal street racing around.

The Red Bull Soapbox Race is a national race for amateur drivers which is fuelled by creativity and competitive fun, not to mention the need for speed. This unique non-motorised racing event challenges both, experienced racers and amateurs to design and build outrageous — human-powered soapbox dream machines to compete against the clock in a downhill race. Teams manning their soapbox creations will careen through a treacherous downhill course featuring jumps, bumps, curves and swerves. But first, it's time to register and start planning, plotting and building your creations. Teams will need more than just courage to claim victory on these city streets as they will be judged on three criteria speed, creativity and showmanship.

Each soapbox must be powered by gravity and imagination, which means no stored power or external energy sources are allowed. And size does matter! Vehicles must not exceed 1.80 metres wide and 3.65 metres in length, at least 18 centimetres from the ground and no more than 2.10 meters tall. Lastly it should not weigh more than 80kgs (without the driver of course). Drivers must be at least 16 years old, but people of all ages are welcome to be part of the four person team.

The Oman event will be the first Red Bull Soapbox Race to ever take place in the Middle East so be sure to register your team online before the deadline on January 28, 2013. The global event dates back to 2000, when it first took place in Belgium, and has since visited almost 40 countries.
