Muscat: One Indian worker was found dead after a fire destroyed a construction company's labour camp near the old OIB bank in Al Khuwair, Tuesday. The deceased has been identified as Sohan, an employee of the company. He hailed from the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh and was working as a watchman in the company.

While four workers trapped inside the camp managed to escape with minor burns, Sohan's body was recovered from inside the camp at around 3pm. The fire broke out at around 8am and created panic in the area. "Around 8am, we got a call that the camp has caught fire. We rushed to the spot and informed the police. Soon, firefighters with five fire engines rushed to the spot and braved the flames to contain them from spreading to other nearby buildings and put them off," sources said.

"After the four workers managed to escape, we started to look for others. Soon, we realised that Sohan is missing. We tried to get in touch with him over phone. But our attempts went in vain as it remained switched off. By 3pm, the police managed to find his charred body inside the camp," the sources added.

Around 35 workers were staying in five rooms in the camp. "As a majority of them were at their worksites, a major disaster was averted. But, the workers have lost their savings and belongings. Some of them were planning to go home soon, so they had been collecting gifts for their near and dear ones. Now, they have lost everything. Some have even lost money, which they had left in the camp while going to work," sources said.
