January 23, 2013 | 12:00 AM

Muscat: Omani sporting star Ahmad Al Harthy, the 2012 Porsche Carrera Cup GB Pro-Am 1 Champion, will be providing demonstration runs in his title-winning car in the heart of the Sultanate – and is offering the chance for lucky members of the public to sit alongside him!

Organised in conjunction with his UK-based motor racing squad which operates the Oman Air Racing Team, Redline Racing, the prestigious event will take place at the Oman Automobile Association in Seeb between 6pm and 8pm this evening. Ahmad's sensational 450bhp Porsche 911 GT3 car has been specially flown to Oman for the exciting spectacle and has been fitted with a passenger seat to enable some selected VIP guests, and a few very fortunate motorsport fans, to experience the 31-year-old's skills behind the wheel first hand.

"This is a very exciting event and an extremely important one, both for me personally and for all those in Oman who have been part of my career", said the Muscat based racer, "I'm really looking forward to being able to drive my championship-winning car on home ground and to give as many people as possible, what is, quite a rare chance to see an active racing car in Oman up close.

"We have a large number of guests coming along, my fantastic sponsors – Oman Air, Oman Ministry of Sports Affairs, Oman Ministry of Tourism, Nawras, National Bank of Oman and Muscat Eye Laser Centre – and family too.

"We're also planning to offer some passenger rides to a few lucky members of the public too who come along and we'll have some competitions to win other prizes."

Ahmad, who is yet to reveal his plans for the 2013 motor racing season, has long been Oman's most successful and high profile racing driver and his title victory in Porsche Carrera Cup GB last year was the perfect culmination of a three-year plan in the UK series.

Such is the Omani's popularity, large crowds are expected to attend this evening's event at the Oman Automobile Association so the advice is get there early – particularly if you want to stand the best possible chance to win a passenger ride in the thoroughbred racing Porsche.

Looking ahead to the event, Sulaiman Al Rawahi commented: "Thes event is going to be very exciting and we're delighted Ahmad is going to be able to demonstrate his racing car here in Oman.

"He's a great success story for Omani sport as a whole and we're hoping to see as many people as possible joining us in Seeb for, what will undoubtedly be, a memorable occasion."
