Muscat: Children with cancer who are limited to the hospital’s confined spaces can now catch glimpses of the outside world thanks to an initiative through which they received tablet computers.
Well-wishers at the Royal Hospital in Oman distributed 30 Samsung tab e devices to the bedridden children at the Hematology and Oncology department to fulfil their educational and entertainment needs.

Following a survey conducted by the hospital’s staff, children were found lacking entertainment in their lives.
“We built a play room for the children but many of them are on chemotherapy and can’t leave their room,” said Aisha Al Habsi, a nurse at the hospital.
“So we, in coordination with volunteers and W J Towell Company, decided to provide them with the latest tablet computers,” she said.
According to a hospital official, the device features educational applications such as (Mathematics garden) and games like, where is my water? Trip Trap, Glow Hockey, Color Switch and Cut Rope.
Al Habsi said that the children, between one and 13 years old, were very happy and excited about these devices that many of them were staying awake at night just to play the games.
“Educational apps can also cover for some of their missed education as those patients can’t go to school,” she explained, while adding that the hospital installed health awareness apps in the devices to educate kids on how to protect themselves from possible diseases and infections.
“The children have weak immune system and they need such awareness,” she added.
