Oman Health: Ministry defends medics over death of 2-year-old girl

Muscat: Grieving relatives of a two-year-old girl who died on Wednesday morning after a five day battle with a head injury have accused medics of “not taking her case seriously”.

Following a car accident, Sarah was rushed to Ibri hospital at 1:00pm on Saturday along with her 13-year-old sister.

Only nine months ago, the family lost their dad in a car accident.

According to Mohammed Al Hanai, a relative of the deceased child, doctors at Ibri hospital recommended transferring Sarah to Al Khoula Hospital in Muscat as there was no neurologist available in Ibri.

While the widowed mother is not in a condition to talk to media, her eldest son said that Khoula Hospital staff denied their transfer request saying that there was no bed available.

Wael, Sarah’s 21-year-old brother, said that at 6pm, officials in Khoula called the family saying that they could transfer Sarah, but her condition was not stable enough for the trip from Ibri to Muscat.

The girl was sedated and doctors were not sure if they could transfer her safely.

The Ministry of Health (MoH) said that they feel for Sarah’s family but they clarified that they are satisfied that she received sufficient care in Ibri hospital.

In a statement, MoH explained that Sarah was in a “very critical condition”.

“After contacting Khoula Hospital, the technical report suggested that she did not need to be transferred as her case did not require any surgical intervention." MoH said.

“After the insistence of her family, she was accepted in the hospital on Tuesday 19 July but God had a different will,” MoH explained.

At 4:00am, Wednesday, Sarah passed away.
